The power of Search now across apps

A task as simple as choosing a movie to see can actually be complex — and the information you want can be in several different places, often in apps. You might get your trivia from IMDb, the box office stats from Wikipedia and ratings from Rotten Tomatoes. Starting today, Google can save you the digging for information in the dozens of apps you use every day, and get you right where you need to go in those apps with a single search. Google Search can make your life a little easier by fetching the answer you need for you — whether it’s on the web, or buried in an app.

Getting you there faster
Let’s say you’re getting ready for the holidays but can’t remember the name of that classic Christmas movie you want to show your children. Now, you can use Google search to find the movie and learn more about it in one of your favorite apps.

Helping you find just the right app
Sometimes, the best answer for a search can be an app. Say you want to explore downhill skiing — now, you can just ask Google for downhill skiing apps and get a collection of useful apps.

These new features are rolling out now on Android (through the Google Search app or directly in Chrome and Android browsers). App listings for from Google Play will appear in search when they’re relevant. You’ll be able to search within a select number of apps initially (learn more). This is just one step toward bringing apps and the web together, making it even easier to get the right information, regardless of where it’s located.

Xperia Z root now working on handsets with locked bootloaders

An exploit has been discovered on the Sony Xperia Z that allows users to root the phone even if their bootloader is locked. Most phones bought directly from some carriers such as O2 and Three in the UK will have locked phones, which means they won’t get to dabble with custom ROMs. However, this exploit means that they can at least enjoy a rooted phone.

The exploit was discovered by @goroh_kun who provided a rootkit. Another user, @huhka_com then packaged an EasyRooting Toolkit for people to use. The exploit is designed for use on the Japanese DoCoMo version of the Xperia Z (SO-02E), but western users of the Xperia Z (C6603) are reporting success too. Gmail now speaks six more Asian languages

No matter where you’re from, language shouldn’t be a barrier when it comes to keeping in touch with the people you care about. From today, Gmail is available in six more Asian languages including Chinese (Hong Kong), Khmer, Lao, Mongolian, Nepali and Sinhala.

Over the last ten years we’ve made Gmail accessible to many more Asian language speakers—though there’s still a long way to go before it’s available in the 2,200 languages spoken across the region. In 2005, we introduced Gmail in Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Filipino, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Thai and Vietnamese. Three years later, we followed with Malay, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu. With today’s additions, Gmail is now a true polyglot speaking 71 languages—covering 94% of the world’s Internet population.

From Chinese (HK) to Sinhala (pictured above), Gmail now speaks six more Asian languages

As any native speaker knows, each language has its own nuances, and we worked closely with linguists around the world to make sure the tone and style came out just right. For example, both Hong Kong and Taiwan use traditional Chinese characters. However, you’ll notice that Gmail’s new Chinese (Hong Kong) language uses 收件箱 for “Inbox” instead of 收件匣, which is a more common term in Taiwan.
